Nana Ofori Panin fought the first of several wars with the Akwamus. When the people of Accra, Gyakiti and Akuapem appealed to him for assistance against the Akwamus, Okyenhene Ofori Panin ordered his nephew Safori into battle. The Akwamus were defeated and Safori, also known as Ofori Kuma was installed paramount Chief of Akuapem. He established his first
capital in Amanprobi but moved to settle in Akropong. Henceforth, the Okyenhene and the Akuapemhene have been both kin and allies. Akyem Abuakwa continued to prosper and still refused to pay tribute to the
Asantehene, Osei Tutu. In 1717, Osei Tutu led an invading army into Abuakwa. The Asante royal party camped at Koromante, near river Pra.
The next day, as Osei Tutu was carried across the river, he was wounded
by the Akyem soldiers. The Asantehene fell out of his litter and was drowned. The Asante army burnt down Koromante and retreated.
The Paramount Stool and the Palace in Kyebi are named after Ofori Panin.
